This piece has exceptional New England cherry wood, flawless form, technical perfection, and the very desirable "Lindquist hand-carved, relieved cracks."   One of the major significances of this vase is the way the cracks have been handled.  Mark began "relieving" cracks (the natural checks that occur during drying) in the early 70's by hand carving and sanding them.  The effect was a "Kanji - like" (Japanese calligraphy characters) design aspect which is integral to the design of the piece.  It is part of an overall design philosophy that Melvin has developed (and historically implemented) to accept all the irregularities of the wood as being meaningful and critical to the design.

This Hollow Turned and Carved Vase is an exquisite example of the highly prized blind bored pieces made in the early 80's.  This piece is especially intriguing because of the very deep carving and painstaking hand finishing.

Cherry Burl is a medium dense northern hardwood which turns, carves and polishes beautifully.
