Mark Lindquist, Bird In (Pre)-Flight, 2007-2008, American Black Cherry

"...Soul’s Journey is a partner exhibition to David Hutto & Chanse Simpson’s brilliant documentary series
which documents the backgrounds, motivations and methods for creating works of art that influence the work of
22 significant contemporary artists living and working in the South----from Virginia to Florida..."

The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design, Hendersonville, NC

"...I began making Bird in (Pre) Flight as a statement about the war in the desert, and about war in general...the signs, the signifiers, the emblems of suffering and shame, the ideas of power, might and arms.  I had toyed with the idea of naming the piece "Cherry Bomb" but instead felt that the reference to Brancusi's Bird in Flight, could be more subtle or powerful, revisited..."

Mark Lindquist

"...Bird in (Pre) Flight is a fascinating image of Lacan's phallus, an indictment of war, and an ambiguous view of the power, responsibility, and the problems involved in creating where bad as well as good can be the result...."
