"...I began making
Bird in (Pre) Flight as a statement about the war in the
desert, and about war in general...the signs, the signifiers, the emblems
of suffering and shame, the ideas of power, might and arms. I had
toyed with the idea of naming the piece "Cherry Bomb" but instead felt
that the reference to Brancusi's Bird in Flight, could be more subtle or
"...Bird in (Pre) Flight is a fascinating image of Lacan's phallus, an indictment of war, and an ambiguous view of the power, responsibility, and the problems involved in creating where bad as well as good can be the result...."
